Visiting Malawi & the country of residence for the Malawi Mission abroad

Travelling to Malawi

Travelling to Malawi is very easy. You can follow the following steps:

·     Contact your local travel agent to know the available travel options and costs.

·    Apply for an entry visa from the Malawi Embassy. We encourage you to make a TENTATIVE air ticket reservation  to depart at least in two weeks’ time from the day you submit your application forms.

·    Once you have been issued with an entry visa, confirm your flight books and finalize your preparations for travel. If you flight is long flight and involves at least two stops, we recommend shrink-wrapping your check-in luggage before departure to avoid damages from handling.

The following African airlines fly to Malawi :  Malawi Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, South African Airways,

Most international flights land at Lilongwe, Malawi's capital, but several flights, especially those from Johannesburg, land at the business centre of Blantyre in the south.

Transportation in Malawi

Travelling in Malawi is easy. The public transportation in dependable and roads are well maintained.

Malawi has a number of car hire companies that offer car hire with or without driver to any part of Malawi. Car hire Companies include:

·        SS Rent-A-Car

·        Sputnik Car Hire

·        Nyassa Air Taxi (Fly-In Safari Company)

·        Bush and Lake Aviation

In Malawi, driving is on the left side of the road, as is the case in the United Kingdom, Japan and all of southern Africa.

To save travel time, tourists can use domestic flights to fly to Lilongwe, Blantyre or Mzuzu as appropriate.

When to visit

Malawi is always beautiful. The cooler months (May to October) are comfortable for travelers from the northern hemisphere, but the lush green summer (November to April) is also a good time to visit. The May and June months combine the best of both seasons - cooler, still green with great visibility - and are especially good for photography.

Game viewing is best in the hottest times of the dry season when the animals are forced to visit water sources, but the country is more attractive in the wetter, greener months. Bird watchers enjoy their best sightings in October and November.

Check for school holiday dates, particularly for those in South Africa when more tourists visit Malawi and resorts can become crowded.
